A Quiet Practice for Orderly Records
Retirely was founded on a single observation: retirement paperwork rarely arrives in order, and most people need a calm pair of hands to help sort it before anything else can happen.
Back to HomeHow Retirely Came to Be
Retirely grew out of a very ordinary problem noticed in George Town in the early 2010s. A coordinator, helping an elderly neighbour prepare for a hospital visit, spent an afternoon going through a shoebox of papers that turned out to contain EPF statements, a will draft, insurance correspondence, a lease, and three years of utility bills — all filed together with no particular logic. The neighbour was not careless. She had simply never had a reason to sort them, and nobody had offered to help her do it.
That afternoon became a pattern. Friends of friends started asking for similar help. The work grew slowly, by word of mouth, until it became clear that a proper practice was called for — somewhere with a fixed address, a consistent method, and a clear statement of what the service does and does not cover.
Retirely opened its office at 17 Jalan Kelawai in 2017. The name is a quiet play on words: to retire something is also to file it away. The practice has always worked on referral and repeat engagement rather than volume, which suits the pace the work requires.
Our mission is to reduce the administrative weight that often settles on households at or near retirement — not by doing regulated work, but by bringing the kind of calm, methodical attention that most families simply do not have spare time for. When the papers are in order, every other conversation about what comes next becomes a little easier to have.
How We Work
A document tray that took years to reach its current state is not going to make sense in an hour. We plan each engagement with enough time for the household to absorb what is happening.
Summaries, checklists and handover maps are written in the plainest language we can manage. If a family member who was not present can follow what we have written, it is ready to hand over.
We do not drift into regulated territory when it would be convenient to do so. Where a question touches entitlements or legal matters, we write it down as an open item and suggest a qualified professional.
We handle private correspondence, account statements and family documents every day. Nothing is copied without consent, nothing is retained after the engagement closes, and nothing is shared outside the household.
Retirement paperwork often needs to be navigated by more than one person. Deliverables are designed so that a spouse, adult child or trusted friend can pick up the file and find what they need.
We know the neighbourhood and the practical context — local institutions, common document types, the pace at which things move here. That familiarity matters when you are working with somebody's personal papers.

Our Working Standards
Every engagement begins with a written note confirming what is included, what is excluded, and what the deliverables are. No session starts until both parties are clear on the scope.
Personal documents are photographed or scanned only with explicit consent, stored only on your own storage device, and not retained on Retirely systems after the engagement closes.
Every written deliverable — summary, checklist, handover map — goes through an internal review before being handed to the household, to check for clarity and completeness.
Any point that touches regulated matters — entitlements, legal questions, financial interpretation — is documented as an open item and you are helped to identify an appropriate qualified professional.
Managing retirement paperwork in Malaysia often involves a wide range of documents from different sources: statements from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), correspondence from SOCSO, private insurance policies, pension letters, property documents, bank account records, and personal identification papers — accumulated over decades and stored in ways that made sense at the time but are difficult to navigate when you need to find something quickly.
The task of bringing all of this into order is primarily administrative. It involves sorting, grouping, labelling, scanning and writing — skills that any careful and systematic person can apply, without needing a regulated professional licence to do so. The regulated part of retirement planning — understanding what you are entitled to, when and how to apply, and what options are available — remains firmly with licensed financial planners, estate lawyers and the relevant institutions.
Retirely occupies the administrative side of this work. Our coordinators are trained in records management and document organisation, not in financial advice. We are based in George Town and serve households in Penang and, on occasion, by video call from further afield. If you are not sure whether your situation falls within our scope, the most direct thing to do is send a short note — we will tell you plainly whether we can help or whether we are the wrong address.
Ready to Start Sorting?
A short initial conversation — by phone or by note — is all that is needed. We can explain exactly what a session would look like for your particular situation.
